Symposium at the ISSBD 2024

Francesca Ialuna organized the symposium"Addressing Cultural Diversity Practices in Primary to Higher Education: Associations with Relational and Academic Outcomes" for the 27th Biennial Meeting of the International Society for the Study of Behavioural Development (ISSBD) in Lisbon together with Savaş Karataş (Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg).

In the symposium participated also Jana Vietze (Erasmus University Rotterdam) and Gülseli Baysu (Queen's University Belfast). Francesca Ialuna presented the study "Culturally Responsive Teaching, Teacher-Student Relationship and School Belongingness: A Multi-Informant Study in Ethnically Diverse Classrooms". Francesca Ialuna defended her PhD thesis

On March, 26 2024 Francesca Ialuna successfully defended her PhD Thesis with the title: "Valuing Cultural Diversity at School: How Schools and Teachers can Promote the Adjustment of Immigrant, Refugee and Non-Immigrant Children”. Congratulations!!

Conference JUROP

Anna-Maria Mayer presented results regarding the development of a European identity in adolescence at the conference of our cooperation project "JUROP". The conference marked the imminent official end of the project. Findings of the project can be looked up here: JUROP.

BMBF conference

At the final conference of the BMBF funding line "Cohesion in Europe" Philipp Jugert and Anna-Maria Mayer were invited for a podium discussion. In addition to presenting key results of JUROP, they discussed cohesion in Europe and how solidarity could be established.

Press release on new publication

The UDE has issued a press release on the publication of a joint paper by Philipp Jugert and Anna-Maria Mayer with Sauro Civitillo. The meta-analysis examined the effects of teacher-based ethnic discrimination on well-being and academic achievement of ethnic minority students. The full article is readable in the Journal of Educational Psychology.

Emerging Scholar Spotlight shines on Anna-Maria Mayer

The Emerging Scholar Spotlight of the European Association of Research on Adolescence (EARA) shines in September auf on a study on political media consumption of adolescents, written by Anna-Maria Mayer in first authorship.

4. CDME Conference in Halle

Our AG was represented with various contributions at the CDME in Halle. Philipp Jugert (together with Sauro Civitillo, Utrecht University) gave a pre-conference workshop on "Reflective Migration Research with Quantitative Methods".

Workshop on reflexive quantitative migration research

Sauro Civitillo and Philipp Jugert organized a workshop on "Critical and reflective migration research with quantitative methods" at the Dezim annual conference in Berlin on 05.10.2022. Keynote speakers were Moin Syed, University of Minessota and Anne-Kathrin Will, HU Berlin.

Our AG was represented with various papers at the 52. Kongress der deutschen Gesellschaft für Psychologie (dgps) in Hildesheim. The pre-print of the meta-analysis we presented on the effects of ethnic discrimination on well-being and school performance is available at online.

AG IK at the EARA in Dublin

Our AG was represented with a paper at the EARA in Dublin. Anna-Maria Mayer Anna gave a presentation on "What it means to be European for adolescents living in Germany".

Sauro Civitillo appointed Assistant Professor at Utrecht University

Dr. Sauro Civitillo has received and accepted an appointment as Assistant Professor at the Department of Interdisciplinary Social Science and the European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic Relations (ERCOMER) at Utrecht University (The Netherlands). His position will start on 01 October 2022. We congratulate Sauro very much!

AG-contributions at the CDME Potsdam

Our AG is represented with several contributions at this year's 3rd Cultural Diversity, Migration, and Education Conference. Sauro Civitillo gives a workshop on Open Science. Marie Jolanda Kaiser and Francesca Ialuna present papers in the paper session "Heritage culture, socialization and resources". Philipp Jugert is chair of the symposium "The role of student-teacher relationships for students' identity, social and learning outcomes in culturally diverse schools (Tagungsprogramm). 

New DFG project approved

Dr. Sauro Civitillo was awarded the project "A Diary Study on the Relationship between Ethnic Discrimination in School and School Engagement" by the DFG.

Two new research projects approved

We are pleased to announce that we have been approved for two new research projects. The project JUROP investigates Europe- and EU-related attitudes and behaviors of young people and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The project RaMo investigates the underlying causes of discrimination against students with a Roma background by teachers and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as part of the Monitoring of Racism.

New project approved

We are pleased to announce that we (Prof. Philipp Jugert and Dr. Sauro Civitillo) have been granted the project "School Integration of Newly Immigrated Children: An Ecological Multilevel Perspective" by the Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR). The project will be carried out together with Prof. Birgit Leyendecker and Dr. Julian Busch (Ruhr-Universität Bochum) and Prof. Nele McEvany (TU Dortmund University).

Lecture announcement

Philipp Jugert gave a lecture on 01.10.2019 on the topic "Lebenswelt und Identität junger Migrant:innen in Bewergung" [Lifeworld and Identity of Young Migrants on the Move] at the Fachtagung der Jugendmigrationsdienste in Essen.

New Publications

In an article just published online in the journal Child Development, we show that adolescents are primarily influenced in their ethnic identity by same-ethnic but not inter-ethnic friends. The UDE has published a press release press release on this topic.
