Research in Engineering
Closely networked with unique bandwidth
Engineering at UDE, with its closely networked four departments, offers a unique range of research with four faculty foci. Research is closely linked to teaching at the highest level oriented to the faculty foci. With its 73 departments, the faculty is one of the largest engineering faculties in Germany. Supported by five affiliated institutes and other cooperating institutes, the faculty efficiently and quickly translates its research results, achieved together with partners from other national and international research institutions as well as business and industry, into practical projects ready for application.

This is not the only reason why the engineering sciences at the University of Duisburg-Essen are highly regarded and networked internationally in many fields: They occupy a top position in nanotechnology as well as in research into combustion processes, for example. International visibility and reputation are also high in the fields of automotive engineering, energy, environmental technology and semiconductor research. The same applies to the optimization of communication, radio and radar systems, energy networks as well as optoelectronics and interactive media systems.
Faculty Research Profiles
The Faculty of Engineering has updated and summarized the structuring of its research activities in distinctly interdisciplinary faculty foci. These bundle the research activities of the majority of the disciplines across departmental boundaries.
Tailored Materials
The research profil Tailored Materials comprises both basic and application-oriented research. In addition to the further development, processing and integration of materials, a particular focus is on the interdisciplinary approach.
Human-Centered Cyber-Physical Systems
Digitization of the real world creates a cycle of data that is collected and processed via sensors. The aggregation and use of this data contributes to the control of the physical world. A particular focus is on the interaction between humans and technology.
Energy and Resource Engineering
To ensure a sustainable energy supply, new concepts for energy generation, storage and transport must be researched. For the time being, the focus is on hydrogen. Future mobility and the optimal use and conversion of resources are also at the forefront.
New to the Faculty of Engineering?

Here you will find interesting information for newly appointed professors.
Transfer
The Faculty of Engineering transfers knowledge from the university to application at many levels and in many ways. Indeed, this close link between academia and industry is one of the traditional strengths of German engineering.
Sustainability
Sustainability is now one of the big drivers of research in the Faculty of Engineering. This is clearly reflected in the topics of the projects that the individual departments are working on.
