In the Essen Laboratory for Lightweight Structures (ELLF) we have specialised in the research and testing of technical fabrics and foils for membrane structures. Our testing expertise is incorporated into many membrane construction projects worldwide, as is our research background through our active participation in the many national and European committees and working groups for the standardisation of membrane construction.

​​Since 2019, the Institute for Metal and Lightweight Structures has been recognised by the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt) as a testing, monitoring and certification body in accordance with the state building regulations with the code number NRW71.

As part of the University of Duisburg - Essen, we carry out both basic and applied research, thereby consistently implementing our research mission. Our research serves science and industry alike through our manufacturer-independent perspectives and through the regular publication of our research results in renowned journals and at conferences. We also present our research progress to a broad public at our in-house symposium every 2 years.
