Description

The master's program offers a combination of economic and technical study content specialized in the automotive sector. Mechanical or electrical engineering can be chosen as the technical specialization. The program is aimed at lateral and forward thinkers who want to meet the management challenges of the often technology-driven automotive companies. The aim is to train creative generalists who can, for example, also manage the transition to electromobility.

Graduates of the program should be qualified for all technical and economic fields of work, for example

  • for (leading) functions in the cross-sectional areas of planning and controlling or
  • for (leading) functions in operational functional areas, for example in technical purchasing, development planning, planning the commercialization of new products and technologies (for example electric vehicles), logistics planning, production planning and technical marketing.

Admission

Admission requirements

Prerequisite for admission to the Master's program "Automotive Engineering & Management" is the successful completion of the following

  • the bachelor's degree program in industrial engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen or
  • an equivalent or comparable degree program in the field of industrial engineering.

The overall grade of the degree must generally be at least 2.5 or better.

The determination of equivalence is made by the examination board. As a rule, the following are considered equivalent

  • a relevant course of study lasting at least three and a half years with a first professional degree and a total workload of at least 210 credits in the field of industrial engineering at another university within the scope of the German Higher Education Framework Act, or
  • a relevant degree from another higher education institution outside the scope of the Higher Education Framework Act, unless a significant difference in quality to a degree from a higher education institution within the scope of the Higher Education Framework Act can be demonstrated.
  • a Bachelor's degree in engineering or business administration from the University of Duisburg-Essen or from another university within the scope of the Framework Act for Higher Education, subject to conditions if applicable.

If the qualification (incl. specialized internship) is not given, in particular if a first degree qualifying for a profession with less than 210 credits is available, the examination board can combine the admission with the condition to prove certain competences until the registration of the master thesis. The type and scope of these requirements are determined individually by the Examination Committee on the basis of the course content completed as part of the previous degree. The scope of the requirements is up to 30 ECTS credits.

Living & Studying at the University of Duisburg-Essen

Semester

The academic year is divided into semesters.

  • Winter semester: from October to March
  • Summer semester: from April to September

Lecture period

The winter lecture period usually starts in mid-October and ends in mid-February. In summer, the lecture period usually starts in mid-April and ends in July. During the winter semester there is a break of about two weeks during the Christmas holidays.

Examination phase

The examination phase begins about one week after the end of the lecture period and lasts about seven weeks.

Semester fee

All students have to pay a semester fee (social contribution) of about 320,- Euro per semester. You can find the current amount here. The social contribution includes, among other things, a semester ticket for public transportation in North Rhine-Westphalia and discounts on meals in the university's canteen and cafeteria.

Living expenses

We recommend to consider approximately 800 to 1000 Euro of personal expenses per month.

Accommodation

Accommodation is possible in dormitories of the Studierendenwerk and in premises of the free housing market. The rent in a room in a student dormitory is about 300,- Euro per month. You can find more information about housing options here.

Nitharsan JeyamGraduate's testimonials

"Looking back, I really enjoyed studying at UDE and would want to make that decision again. A positive study environment was always given; the opportunities at and around the university location are broadly established for students in non-Covid times.

The Automotive Engineering and Management program is a very specialized program, so innovative mobility-related modules were offered. Practical relevance was not neglected either - several guest lectures from ammenous companies rounded off the course of studies.

University partnerships with foreign universities also enabled me to spend time abroad during my master's studies."
