Admission

Admission requirements

The prerequisite for admission to the Master's degree programme in teaching at Haupt-, Real- and Gesamtschulen is the successful completion of the following

  • a Bachelor's degree programme with the teacher training options Hauptschule, Realschule, Sekundarschule and Gesamtschule or, subject to a condition according to sentence 4, a Bachelor's degree programme consisting of two subjects admitted to the combination according to § 3 par. 2 LZV with the teacher training option Gymnasien/Gesamtschule or Bachelor's degree programme at the University of Duisburg-Essen, or
  • a relevant course of study of at least three years' duration in two subjects approved for combination in accordance with § 3 Para. 2 LZV and educational science and subject didactics content at another higher education institution within the scope of the Higher Education Framework Act with a Bachelor's degree or a comparable degree, provided the examination board has determined the equivalence of this degree, or
  • a relevant course of study of at least three years in two subjects admitted for combination according to § 3 Para. 2 LZV and educational science and subject didactic contents at a higher education institution outside the scope of the Higher Education Framework Act with a Bachelor's degree or a comparable degree, provided that the examination board has determined the equivalence of the course of study and the degree as well as a level of the degree which corresponds to that of a degree at a higher education institution within the scope of the Higher Education Framework Act.

The admission requirements can be found in the Common Examination Regulations for the Master's programme with the teaching option Haupt-, Real- and Gesamtschulen.

If, at the time of the application deadline for the Master's programme, there is still no degree certificate according to Para. 2 GPO, the applicant can be provisionally admitted on the condition that proof is provided that all examination achievements have been completed, that the prerequisites of Para. 3 GPO are met on the basis of the examination achievements already assessed and that the certificate is submitted subsequently by 15 December or 15 June.

The subject examination regulations may also contain special regulations for admission to the degree programme.

Admission

Admission is possible for both the winter semester and the summer semester.
This degree programme is currently free of admission if the above-mentioned admission requirements are met.

Please enquire in good time before the application deadline in the student registrar's office.

Enrolment can be carried out during the enrolment period in the student registrar's office (in the case of Master's degree programmes with open admission until the end of the lecture period).

Prospective students from non-EU countries should enquire at the International Office.

Language Skills

The language of instruction at the University of Duisburg-Essen is German (except in the English-language programs). Therefore, you must have good German language skills if you want to study successfully. The majority of foreign applicants must pass the "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang" (DSH 2 level; with some exceptions) before beginning their studies.

  • German nationals (persons who have acquired their higher education entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad) do not require any special proof of German language skills.
  • Citizens of an EU member state (and citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) or German citizens with a foreign educational qualification, as well as
  • Citizens of a country outside the EU with a foreign university entrance qualification must pass the "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang" (DSH 2 level) or the TestDaF (TDN 4) before the begin of their studies.

Further language skills

Students of a teacher training programme must prove knowledge of two foreign languages for admission to the preparatory service. Students without a general higher education entrance qualification usually lack this proof (e.g. acquisition of the subject-linked higher education entrance qualification at a vocational college with only one foreign language). This must be provided by the time of registration for the preparatory service. Those who have learned a language other than German as their first language and have acquired their higher education entrance qualification in German only have to prove knowledge of one foreign language. Proof of two foreign languages is therefore not an admission requirement for the degree programme (exception: you combine the subjects English and Turkish). For individual partial degree programmes, certain language skills are required as an entrance requirement for the Bachelor's or Master's degree programme and must be proven either for enrolment (Bachelor's/Master's) or during the course of studies.
