Central Facilities

Various state of the art facilities offer specific services for our researchers. The interdisciplinary nature of the ZMB with its close links to faculties of the natural sciences and the University Hospital Essen allows access to central infrastructure at both campuses.

Analytics Core Facility Essen (ACE)

The "Analytics Core Facility Essen (ACE)" provides state-of-the-art analytical services for all ZMB researchers and collaborating groups of the University Duisburg-Essen or external universities or research institutions.

It offers a large number of different services for performing proteomics or for the characterization of small molecules. An important aspect of its work is to integrate and provide timely approaches for mass spectrometry of proteins, other biomolecules and biomarkers (proteomics, metabolomics).

Imaging Center Campus Essen (ICCE)

The ICCE is an imaging core facility of the Center of Medical Biotechnology (ZMB) at the University of Duisburg-Essen and provides state-of-the-art equipment for advanced light microscopy techniques as well as technical advice in sample preparation and support in image analysis for ZMB researchers and internal and external collaborating groups or research institutions.

Available techniques at ICCE include confocal microscopy, fluorescence imaging microscopy and spectroscopy, total internal reflection microscopy , widefield deconvolution and epifluorescence microscopy, transmitted light techniques, acute photostimulation, UVA laser ablation, microinjection, as well as automated microscopy and screening. Most of the microscopes are equipped with environmental chambers to control temperature, humidity and gas composition for proper live-cell imaging.

Imaging Center Essen (IMCES)

The "Imaging Center Essen (IMCES)" is an imaging service core facility of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, directed by ZMB member Prof. Dr. Matthias Gunzer. IMCES can offer its services with two powerful arms, with the Light Microscopy and FACS Unit (LMU) and with the Electron Microscopy Unit (EMU). The facility brings together modern equipment for light and electron microscopy, including fluorescence live-cell widefield microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), light sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM), intravital 2-photon microscopy, superresolution imaging (STED microscopy, PAL-M, SIM), FLIM, (cryo-)SEM and TEM and FIB/SEM. With this equipment correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) is a central research topic at the IMCES. Apart from microscopy systems, the IMCES provides access to small animal ultrasound, in vivo whole body imaging and flow cytometry, including cell sorting. Next to the high-level infrastructure the IMCES provides advanced knowledge in experimental design, sample preparation and image analysis to its users. These services are available for all academic researchers, irrespective of their location and affiliation

Genomics & Transcriptomics Facility (GTF)

At the Genomics & Transcriptomics Facility (GTF) of the Institute for Cell Biology (Tumor Research) Affymetrix microarray analysis and next-generation sequencing are carried out and evaluated for the institutes and clinics of the medical faculty, the University of Duisburg-Essen and other institutions outside Essen as part of various cooperation projects, in order to ensure broad application in basic research and in clinical studies.
