New Examination Regulation PO24

The Faculty of Engineering is restructuring its range of courses for the winter semester 2024/25 and is also adapting some existing courses in this context. This includes adjusting the credit points and updating the content as well as adapting the regulations to the university's new framework examination regulations. Furthermore, several new specializations and profiles have been added to the degree courses and the elective catalogs have been adapted to new research findings and areas. The specific changes are as follows.

The titles of various modules and their contents as well as the number of semester hours per week and credit points have been adjusted.

The following degree programs and specializations have been renamed. The contents have been adapted accordingly.

  • The specialization "Telemedicine" in the Master's degree course "Medical Engineering" is now called "Neuroengineering and Robotics".
  • The specialization "Energy and Process Engineering" in the Bachelor's and Master's degree course "Mechanical Engineering" is now called "Sustainable Energy and Process Engineering".
  • The specialization "Product Engineering" in the Bachelor's and Master's degree course "Mechanical Engineering" is now called "Product Design and Engineering".
  • The specialization "Ship and Offshore Technology" in the Bachelor's and Master's degree course "Mechanical Engineering" is now called "Sustainable and Autonomous Maritime Systems".
  • The specialization "Metal Processing and Application" in the Bachelor's and Master's degree course "Mechanical Engineering" is now called "Sustainable Metal Cycles".
  • The Bachelor's degree course "Electrical and Electronic Engineering" is now called "Electrical, Electronic and Communications Engineering".
  • The specialization "Ship and Offshore Technology" in the Master's degree course "Mechanical Engineering" is now called "Sustainable and Autonomous Maritime Systems".
  • The Master's degree course "Automotive Engineering & Management" is now called "Automotive Engineering & Mobility Management".

New specializations have been established in the following degree courses:

  • Bachelor's and Master's "Mechanical Engineering": new specialization "Autonomous Systems"
  • Bachelor's "Mechanical Engineering": new specialization "Technologies of Logistical Systems"
  • Bachelor "Mechanical Engineering": new specialization "Management"
  • Bachelor and Master "Industrial Engineering": Consolidation of the specializations "Electrical Power Engineering" and "Information Technology" into "Electrical Engineering and Information Technology"

The following degree programs and specializations will be discontinued. New enrollment is no longer possible.

  • Bachelor Computer Engineering
  • Bachelor and Master "Mechanical Engineering": specialization "Foundry Technology"

All students already enrolled who started their studies in the summer semester 2024 or before will remain in the old version of the examination regulations and can complete their studies using the existing study plans. They have the opportunity to successfully complete their studies for a period of one and a half times the standard period of study (RSZ). This period starts for Bachelor's degree programs from winter semester 2023/24 and for Master's degree programs from summer semester 2024. This results in the following transitional periods:

  • BA degree programs with RSZ of 6 semesters: end of winter semester 2027/28 (end date 31.3.2028)
  • BA degree programs with RSZ of 7 semesters: end of SoSe 2028 (end date 30.9.2028)
  • MA degree programs with RSZ of 4 semesters: End WiSe 2026/27 (end date 31.3.2027)
  • MA degree programs with RSZ of 3 semesters: end of SoSe 2026 (end date 30.9.2026)
  • MA degree programs with RSZ of 6 semesters: end of SoSe 2028 (end date 30.9.2028)

Should you nevertheless wish to switch from the current PO19 to the new PO24, you can do so by submitting an application. The equivalence list provides an overview of which modules that have already been successfully completed can be credited in the new PO24. Students who are considering a change should definitely weigh up the possible advantages and disadvantages in advance. It is no longer possible to return to PO19 after changing to PO24!

Important notes

  • Courses that are only offered for the old PO19 are offered up to the semester assigned in the curriculum plus one year in which the subject can be taken. The following examples illustrate this:
    • If a course in the Bachelor's degree program is located in the 5th semester, it will be offered until winter semester 2026/27 (5+2 semesters from winter semester 2023/24).
    • If a course appears in a catalog of a Master's degree program from which a selection is to be made in the first 3 semesters according to the study plan, the course will be offered until winter semester 2025/26 if it is scheduled in winter semester.
  • All examinations that are only offered in the old PO19 are offered up to one and a half times the standard period of study of the respective degree program.
  • If new courses are offered in the new PO24 that were not offered in the old PO19, they will only be taught from the semester in which they can be taken according to the study plan. The corresponding examinations will also only be offered from this point in time. The following examples illustrate this:
    • If a course in the Bachelor's degree program is located in the 3rd semester, it will be offered and examined from winter semester 2025/26 (3 semesters from winter semester 2024/25).
    • If a course in the Bachelor's degree program appears in a catalog from which it can be selected from the 4th semester onwards according to the study plan, it will be offered and examined from the SoSe 2026 (4 semesters from WiSe 2024/25).
    • If a course appears in a catalog of a Master's degree program from which it can be selected in the first 3 semesters according to the study plan, the course will be offered and examined directly in winter semester 2024/25 or summer semester 2025 according to the planned rotation.

FAQ PO19 -> PO24

Are the grades also transferred when I change the PO version?

Yes, the grades for passed modules or partial module examinations are also transferred if there is an equivalence.

Are failed attempts also transferred when the PO version is changed?

Yes, the failed attempts are also transferred if there is an equivalence. Failed attempts of conditional subjects (Auflagenfächer) will not be transferred.

Can successfully completed industrial internships be transfered?

If the content of the internship meets the requirements of the internship guidelines, it can be credited. If the required number of weeks for PO24 is longer than for PO19, the resulting time differences must be made up.

Is it only possible to change the PO at the beginning of a new semester or in the middle of a semester?

It is only possible to change from PO19 to PO24 in a subsequent semester, not in the middle of a semester.

If you have successfully passed the examination but are still missing the lab, will the examination be recognized when you change to the new examination regulations, so that you only have to make up for the lab, or do you have to repeat the examination?

Passed module examinations can be recognized if they are equivalent. In this case, you only need to make up the missing examinations or coursework.

Let's assume that I stay in PO19 and the 1.5 times standard period of study has expired and I have only a few exams left that are also offered in PO24. Will I then be transferred to PO24 or can I finish my studies in PO19?

At the end of the transition period, you will automatically be transferred from PO19 to PO24 and it will no longer be possible to continue studying in PO19.

What happens to examinations that have been passed if they are no longer offered 1:1 in PO24, but with different content, for example? How do you know what additional work is required?

If there is an equivalence, this is clearly shown in the equivalence table. This may mean, for example, that there is an equivalence of a course from PO19 that has a different name in PO24 or is taught using different teaching methods. If additional examinations or coursework are required for the recognition of a module, these are also listed in the equivalence list.

Is there a maximum of 3 examination attempts for the conditional subjects in PO24?

In PO24, only 3 examination attempts are possible for examinations in conditional subjects (Auflagenfächer). The same conditions for repeatability apply to conditional subjects as for the courses listed in the curriculum.

Is it possible to switch to the new PO24 in a future semester, for example in the coming summer semester, or is the switch only permitted in this current semester?

It is also possible to switch from PO19 to PO24 at a later semester.

If I change to PO24, will all the modules I have already taken be adjusted to 5 ECTS, or will they retain the 4 or 3 ECTS as in PO19?

The credit points are awarded according to the equivalence list after a change (Credits column for PO24).
